The ASGBI International Congress is the largest General and Emergency Surgery meeting in the UK and ASGBI wholeheartedly invite you to join us.

With some 40 leading speakers from the UK, the US, Australia and Switzerland, the programme for this year’s Congress looks excellent  – whether for latest opinion from clinical leaders, knowledge updates, topics you won’t find in books and web pages, case discussion, procedure videos, discussion of everyday problems, networking, career development or professional stimulation and renewal.

As you will see in the programme, there is a strong clinical focus on current challenges in our practice and there is a concurrent certificated educational programme for trainees or for seniors to update. Other sessions will look at wider issues including legal consequences of social media in surgery and Wellbeing, Burnout and Work-Life Balance. There are separate sessions targeted at Younger Consultants on how to build (or limit) the practice they wish and at Older Consultants (pensions, changes of direction, easing off successfully). The popular round table “Meet the Experts” returns and lets delegates chat to experts in small groups about clinical issues. This will extend into a Career choice session for trainees.

On Tuesday 7th May we start with a series of oral presentation sessions from 1100 hours – late enough to let you travel to Telford in the morning. Telford is easily accessible (further details here).

Professor Averil Mansfield will open the Congress and our first keynote session addresses the theme ‘Coping with Complications’ with Professor Kevin Turner and Mr Neil Smart sharing their experiences. Explorer surgeon Martin Thomas will discuss ‘Coping with adversity’. Our BJS Visiting Professor Nicolas Demartines and Bland Sutton Lecturer, Professor Sharon Stein from Cleveland will each participate in several sessions, including “Meet the Experts”. Multiple symposia will cover the breadth of our practice, specific complications, sepsis update and a cutting edge medico-legal session – essential for all who use social media. Experts will also discuss key current dilemmas around emergency surgery, acute gallstone disease and controversies around right hemicolectomy to name a few. The concurrent educational programme is a must for trainees – with certificates of attendance available.
