President’s Welcome

rowan-parksIt is a great pleasure to invite you to the ASGBI 2018 International Surgical Congress to be held in Liverpool from Wednesday 9th to Friday 11th May 2018. This will be the seventh time in the Association’s 97 year history that the annual meeting will be held in Liverpool. With excellent access by train and air from all parts of the UK and abroad, Liverpool is an excellent venue to host the 2018 meeting.

The theme of the Congress will be “Surgical Teams”, recognising that surgical services are now delivered by multi-disciplinary, multi-professional teams, and that collaborative teamwork has significant benefits in increasing efficiency, improving clinical outcomes, fostering innovation and delivering phenomenal academic and research opportunities.

Building on the success of last year’s Congress, there will continue to be a strong emphasis on high quality plenary sessions and symposia of relevance to established consultants and trainees with a major focus on elective and emergency general surgical care. We look forward to including eponymous lectures from the four Royal Colleges and input from many of our sister Specialty Associations. Following very positive feedback on a number of new initiatives introduced at the Glasgow meeting, we will continue to incorporate educational updates and videos within short paper sessions, and ensuring the very best abstracts are presented in plenary sessions.

In terms of responding to your feedback from the 2017 Congress, we are planning interactive lunchtime sessions dedicated to e-posters, and we will be re-vamping the ever-popular Meet the Expert session, which will feature interactive case-based discussions.

In addition to a great educational and social experience, the aim is to have something for everyone, fulfilling the Association’s founding objectives – “the advancement of the science and art of surgery, and the promotion of friendship amongst surgeons”. We look forward to meeting you and members of your team at the Congress and can assure you of a memorable event.

Finally, please remember that you can make big savings in registration costs by being a member of the Association and taking advantage of our Very Early Bird Registration rate (£399 for Consultants and £250 for Trainees for all three days) which is now live, offering savings of over £200 for Consultants and just under £100 for Trainees!
