The John Wiley and Sons Ltd Audio-Visual Prize
In 1981 an audio-visual competition was instituted with the objective of encouraging the production of educational films suitable for a consultant surgical audience. Within a few years, video format replaced cine film and the competition now attracts a large number of high quality entries which are judged each year by the Scientific Committee. The winners receive £300. Second and third prizes of £200 and £100 are also awarded if the standard is sufficiently high.
The entries for the Audio-Visual Award must be of general surgical interest suitable for an audience of consultants and higher surgical trainees and be produced by a surgeon in association with his/her department of medical illustration.
Commentaries must be in English. Entries must be on SVHS format videotape and be no longer than 10 minutes duration. Any film that lasts longer than 10 minutes will not be accepted
Entries will be judged according to surgical interest, teaching value and technical merit. Those accepted will be shown at the Annual Meeting where a presenter should be available for questions.
A list of equipment used for the production must accompany each entry, together with full names and qualifications of those most involved in the making of the videotape (maximum 4 names).
Commercially produced films will not be accepted. The Association reserves the right to show or not to show the entry.
