Fundraising for The Surgical Foundation

The ASGBI will be raising funds to support our charity, The Surgical Foundation during the Congress in Belfast this May.

Through The Surgical Foundation’s International Bursary Scheme, ASGBI supports the training and development of surgical trainees based in low-income countries with the overall aim of improving surgical standards worldwide.

Each bursary is worth £2,000 and enables trainees to experience two days in a UK or Irish hospital where they learn new techniques and skills, followed by three days at the ASGBI International Surgical Congress.

The ASGBI is delighted to be awarding five bursaries this year, but as such a worthwhile cause, we are keen to raise more funds so as to offer more in the future. We have devised two challenges that we hope will inspire you all to donate, as well as provide some entertainment during the Congress!

Challenge 1: Fixed Cycle Sprint

The President’s Team (Mr John Moorehead – President ASGBI; Mr John Hartley – Executive ASGBI; Mr Neil Welch – Finance Director ASGBI) challenges you to a 15-minute cycle sprint!

We invite you to form a team of three to cycle together for 15 minutes (approximately 5 minutes each) on one of two identical bikes with standard resistance – probably the highest resistance setting!

You can win in one of two ways:

  1. Be the team to travel furthest in 15 minutes! i.e. the Fastest!
  2. Be the team that raises the most money for the Surgical Foundation.

The bikes will be set up in the exhibition area (Hall 1) of the Congress. Each team should register with Bhav at and book a time slot. We would also encourage each team to set up a Total Giving sponsorship page for The Surgical Foundation. By clicking here, you will be able to create your own team page that is already linked to The Surgical Foundation.

For those of you who wish to sponsor the President’s Team, please visit their Total Giving page here.

Challenge 2: Formula 1 Racing Car Simulators

Visit Belfast have arranged for two Formula 1 race car simulators to be set up in the exhibition area (Hall 1) of the Congress! Participants can donate £5 for a 5 minute drive, and the fastest times will be tracked on our leader board. The person with the fastest time at the end of the Congress on Friday afternoon will be deemed the winner, and they will receive an all-expenses paid weekend getaway for two to Belfast, courtesy of Visit Belfast.

The three winners of the fundraising challenges will be announced in the ASGBI communications, and will receive a certificate plus the kudos of knowing that you have beaten the rest!

For those of you who are unable to participate in the challenges, but would like to support The Surgical Foundation, please donate directly via The Surgical Foundation’s Total Giving page, or you can sponsor the President’s Team here.
